1964 The Beatles hold all top five places on the U.S. pop chart with “Can’t Buy Me Love,” “Twist And Shout,” “She Loves You,” “I Want To Hold Your Hand,” and “Please Please Me.” No other artist has ever dominated the top five since.

1968 Jimi HendrixB.B. King, and Buddy Guy play an all-night blues show in New York as a wake for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

1970 “Living Loving Maid (She’s Just A Woman)” by Led Zeppelin hits Number 65 on the pop chart.

1981 “Limelight” by Rush hits Number 55 on the pop chart.

1987 U2‘s The Joshua Tree enters the album chart at Number Seven.

1994 Kurt Cobain‘s mother, Wendy O’Connor, reports to the police that her son is missing and possibly suicidal. They check Cobain’s Seattle home several times but find no one there.

1995 Radiohead releases its second album, The Bends.

1996 Rage Against The Machine‘s second album, Evil Empire, debuts at Number One on the Billboard Top 200 album chart.

1997 Kiss drummer Peter Criss is too ill to play a show in Columbus, Georgia, so drum technician Eddie Kannon sits in for him

2001 System Of A Down singer Serj Tankian publishes his first book of poetry, called Cool Gardens.

2001 Carlos Santana and Metallica lead guitarist Kirk Hammett play a benefit show for the San Francisco School Of The Arts, which is held at the Fillmore.

2002 Singer/guitarist Dave Mustaine announces that due to an injury that caused nerve damage to his arm, he is leaving Megadeth, effectively ending the band after nearly twenty years. He reactivates the group, with all new members, in 2004.

2002 Marilyn Manson is sued for wrongful death by the mother of a woman killed in a car accident that occurred after an evening at the shock rocker’s Los Angeles home that allegedly featured “various quantities” of cocaine.

2003 A Beastie Boys benefit show for the family of slain DJ Jam Master Jay, scheduled for the House Of Blues in Las Vegas, sells out in 24 seconds.

2006 Gorillaz releases a DVD called Gorillaz: Demon Days Live, which was filmed over five nights in Manchester, England in November 2005 as project co-creator Damon Albarn led a contingent of musicians in complete live performances of the Demon Days album.

2009 Metallica is inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, making them only the second pure heavy metal act after Black Sabbath to be inducted. The band performs at the ceremony with bassist Jason Newsted, who left the group in 2001, and also jams at the end of the night with Jeff BeckJimmy PageJoe Perry, and Flea.
