1964 The Beatles‘ appear for the third time on The Ed Sullivan Show.

1969 “Get Back” by the Beatles hits Number One on the pop chart, where it stays for five weeks.

1970 Guitarist Peter Green plays his last show with Fleetwood Mac before joining a religious cult.

1978 Van Halen‘s self-titled debut album is certified gold.

1988 The Van Halen album OU812 is released.

1990 Guns N’ Roses frontman W. Axl Rose and wife Erin Everly file for divorce after being married for 27 days.

1991 The Smashing Pumpkins release their debut album, Gish.

1998 Philadelphia mayor Ed Rendell proclaims May 24th Van Halen Day in a backstage ceremony before the band performs at the CoreStates Spectrum.

2005 Audioslave releases its second album, Out Of Exile, while Seether issues its sophomore effort, Karma And Effect.

2005 Motley Crue files suit against NBC, claiming the television network’s ban on them, a result of singer Vince Neil‘s use of the “F” word on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, has hurt them financially and violated their First Amendment rights.

2006 The Raconteurs, led by White Stripes guitarist and singer Jack White, debut at Number Seven on the Billboard album chart with their debut disc, Broken Boy Soldiers, selling 61,000 copies in its first week on shelves.

2010 Slipknot bass player Paul Gray is found dead in a hotel room in Urbandale, Iowa. The 38-year-old musician’s body is discovered at 10:50 a.m. local time. It is later determined that his death is caused by an overdose of morphine and other drugs.

2013 Stone Temple Pilots file a lawsuit against former frontman Scott Weiland, accusing him of using the band’s name to advance his solo career while claiming that his own poor performances and addiction struggles have harmed the band’s career.
