There will be no hall pass today. Here’s what happened today in Rock N’ Roll.

1967 The Jimi Hendrix Experience makes its U.S. debut on the final night of the Monterey International Pop Festival. Besides the trio’s musicianship, the audience is wowed by Hendrix’s stage antics, including setting his guitar on fire.

1977 Sex Pistols frontman Johnny Rotten is slashed on his face and hands by thugs who apparently object to the band’s song “God Save The Queen.” The next day, guitarist Paul Cook is beaten up.

1980 The Blues Brothers, starring John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd, premieres in New York City.

1987 A woman sues Motley Crue for $5,000, claiming that she lost her hearing at a Crue concert because it was too loud.

1991 Van Halen drummer Alex Van HalenCream drummer Ginger Baker, and Vanilla Fudge drummer Carmine Appice are all inducted into the Hollywood Rock Walk.

2000 Actress Nancy Marchand (Tony’s mother on The Sopranos) dies at age 71.

2001 Hole frontperson Courtney Love and ex-Faith No More keyboardist Roddy Bottum play a set of 1920s standards at a $500-a-plate theatre fundraiser in New York’s Russian Tea Room.

2002 Papa Roach releases its second major label album, Lovehatetragedy.

2007 Motley Crue sues one of its managers, Carl Stubner, who also handles the solo career of Crue drummer Tommy Lee. The lawsuit claims that Stubner tried to “divert revenue” from the group and promote Lee’s activities “to the detriment of the band,” while at the same time mismanaging Lee’s career “so as to harm the Motley Crue brand and Lee’s reputation as a musician and band member.”

2008 Nine songs from the long-delayed Guns N’ Roses album, Chinese Democracy, are briefly leaked online at a site called AntiQuiet.com. Traffic to the site from people trying to download the songs crashes its servers until the tracks are removed.

2013 Van Halen plays the second of just six 2013 concerts in Nagoya, Japan. The 140-minute, 27-song show features three extra numbers — “Atomic Punk,” “Jamie’s Cryin'” and “Mean Street” — added specially to the regular set list.
