1936 Buddy Holly is born. He dies in a plane crash in 1959.

1961 Dave Matthews Band saxophonist LeRoi Moore is born. He dies in August of 2008.

1978 Who drummer Keith Moon dies at age 32.

1978 Ex-Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious plays a solo show at the club Max’s Kansas City in New York City. His backup band features Mick Jones of the Clash on guitar, with Jerry Nolan and Arthur Kane of the New York Dolls on drums and bass, respectively.

1987 Despite threats from former member Roger Waters to sue concert promoters, Pink Floyd kicks off their Momentary Lapse Of Reason tour in Ottawa, Canada.

1991 Motley Crue re-signs with Elektra Records for $22.5 million.

1995 Weezer tops the list of winners at the 12th annual MTV Video Music Awards in New York City.

2001 The movie Rock Star, starring Mark Wahlberg and Jennifer Aniston, opens.

2001 Slipknot‘s second major label album, Iowa, debuts at Number Three on the Billboard 200, selling more than 255,000 copies in its first week of release.

2003 Singer and songwriter Warren Zevon dies at the age of 56.

2004 Franz Ferdinand‘s self-titled debut album wins England’s prestigious Mercury Music Prize.

2005 Death Cab For Cutie‘s hugely hyped fifth album and major label debut, Plans, debuts at Number Four on the Billboard 200 chart with first-week sales of 90,000 copies.

2006 Staind covers Tool‘s “Sober,” Alice In Chains‘ “Nutshell” and Pink Floyd‘s “Comfortably Numb” during a rare acoustic show at New York City’s Hiro Ballroom, which is recorded and filmed for inclusion on a greatest hits album.

2006 Buckcherry is slapped with a lawsuit alleging that the band and its record company, Atlantic Records, coerced a 16-year-old girl into exposing her breasts, kissing another girl and dancing suggestively against a pole in the unedited video for the single “Crazy Bitch.”

2008 Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher is attacked onstage by a male assailant during the band’s set at the Virgin Festival in Toronto. The guitarist suffers several broken ribs, resulting in the postponement of the band’s next few weeks of shows.
