There will be no hall pass today. Here’s what happened today in Rock N’ Roll.

1991 On their way home from the store, punk singer Henry Rollins and his friend Joe Cole are held up by a gang in Venice Beach, California. They are taken back to their house and forced to lie on the floor while the gang tears the place apart. Eventually, however, there is a struggle and Cole is shot dead.
1992 “Who’s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses” by U2 peaks at Number 35 on the pop chart.
1995 Ozzmosis by Ozzy Osbourne is certified both gold and platinum.
1996 The school board of Oakland, California, votes to recognize Black English, also known as “ebonics,” in a decision that sets off a firestorm of controversy. The board later reverses its stance.
1996 No Doubt‘s breakthrough album, Tragic Kingdom, is certified quintuple platinum.
1997 James Cameron‘s epic, Titanic, opens in theaters.
1998 President Bill Clinton is impeached by the Republican-controlled House on Articles I and III, perjury and obstruction of justice. The 42nd chief executive becomes only the second in history to be ordered to stand trial in the Senate, where, like Andrew Johnson before him, he is acquitted.
1999 Actor Desmond Llewelyn, who played Q in 17 James Bond movies, dies at age 85 in a car accident.
2001 The fires that had burned beneath the ruins of the World Trade Center in New York City for the previous three months are declared extinguished, except for a few scattered hot spots.
2003 R.E.M. appears on the TV series Boston Public.
2003 A tour featuring Jane’s Addiction and Marilyn Manson is canceled due to “exhaustion” on the part of Jane’s Addiction.
2005 U2 wraps up the North American portion of its Vertigo world tour in Portland, Oregon, after playing 90 sold-out shows to more than three million fans and grossing $260 million.
2006 Two new Radiohead songs performed live by singer Thom Yorke become available for downloading at fromthebasement.tv.
2007 Marilyn Manson launches a countersuit against former keyboardist Stephen Bier, a.k.a. Madonna Wayne Gacy, who sued Manson the previous August for breach of contract and non-payment. Manson’s suit alleges that Bier did not fulfill his obligations to take part in recordings, concerts and the selling of band merchandise.
2015 Michael Jackson‘s Thriller becomes the first album to sell more than 30 million copies, 33 years after it was released.
