1898 Author Lewis Carroll (Alice In Wonderland) dies at age 65.
1919 Andy Rooney (commentator, 60 Minutes) is born. He dies in November 2011.
1952 The TV morning show Today debuts.
1954 Joe DiMaggio marries Marilyn Monroe.
1957 Actor Humphrey Bogart (The Maltese Falcon, Casablanca, The African Queen) dies at age 57.
1972 The TV show Sanford And Son, starring Redd Foxx, debuts.
1978 The Alice Cooper live album The Alice Cooper Show is released. At the time, Cooper is in a mental hospital, fighting alcoholism.
1978 The Sex Pistols play their last show before breaking up in San Francisco.
1995 The first of two Voters For Choice benefit concerts in Washington, D.C., organized by Pearl Jam, kicks off.
2000 Lead singer Stephen Pearcy quits Ratt.
2000 Rage Against The Machine‘s third and final studio album, The Battle Of Los Angeles, is certified double platinum.
2000 Late Show host David Letterman undergoes emergency quintuple heart bypass surgery after a test finds one of his arteries is seriously constricted.
2001 Guns N’ Roses makes one of its increasingly rare live appearances, playing a two-hour-plus set at Brazil’s Rock In Rio festival.
2003 The Strokes are awarded Best Band, the White Stripes are awarded Best New Band, and Weezer named Best Live Act in Spin magazine’s annual Readers Poll. Creedtakes home the award for Worst Band.
2003 After 10 years, a suspect is arrested in the murder of Mia Zapata, lead singer of Seattle punk band the Gits. James C. Mezquia is taken into custody after a computerized DNA search and match, and later convicted of first-degree murder. Zapata’s death resulted in the Home Alive campaign, supported by modern rockers all over the country.
2004 A judge in Detroit orders White Stripes singer and guitarist Jack White to stand trial in March on a charge of misdemeanor aggravated assault for a December fight in a nightclub with Jason Stollsteimer of the Von Bondies.
2005 A statue of the late Johnny Ramone is unveiled at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles, not far from the grave of former bandmate Dee Dee Ramone. It shows Johnny in a leather jacket, playing his signature Mosrite guitar.
