1892 The rules of basketball, a game that had been invented by James Naismith about a month earlier, are published for the first time, in a YMCA publication.
1913 Actor Lloyd Bridges (High NoonSea HuntAirplane I and IIHot Shots I and II; father of Beau and Jeff Bridges) is born. He dies in 1998.
1929 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is born. He is assassinated in 1968.
1943 Work is completed on the Pentagon, the headquarters of the U.S. Defense Department, in Arlington, Virginia. At the time, it was constructed as a military hospital.
1948 Lynyrd Skynyrd lead singer Ronnie Van Zant is born. He dies in 1977.
1967 The Rolling Stones appear on The Ed Sullivan Show, but are forced to change the lyrics of their single “Let’s Spend The Night Together” to “Let’s Spend Some Time Together” because of CBS censors.
1967 The Green Bay Packers of the National Football League defeat the Kansas City Chiefs of the American Football League, 35-10, in the first Super Bowl.
1974 The TV show Happy Days debuts.
1983 Coda by Led Zeppelin peaks at Number Six on the album chart, where it stays for three weeks.
1987 Actor Ray Bolger (The Wizard Of Oz‘s Scarecrow) dies at age 83.
1999 The film Varsity Blues opens nationwide.
2001 The remaining members of Rage Against The Machine, following the departure of singer Zach De La Rocha, confirm that they will continue to play music together, possibly with a new singer.
2002 Former Alice In Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell signs with Roadrunner Records to release his second solo album, Degradation Trip.
2003 Metallica sues a Canadian punk rock group who call themselves Metallica as a publicity stunt.
2007 The White Stripes and frontman Jack White‘s other band, the Raconteurs, officially become free agents due to the closing of their record label, V2 Records.
2015 Black Crowes guitarist and co-founder Rich Robinson announces the breakup of the band.
2015 Legendary L.A. rock, pop, and punk songwriter, producer, impresario and Runaways manager Kim Fowley dies of bladder cancer at age 75.
2018 Cranberries singer Dolores O’Riordan is found dead in her bathtub in a London hotel room at the age of 46. The cause of death is accidental drowning due to alcohol intoxication.
