1970, Johnny Cash performs for President Nixon at the White House. Nixon wouldn’t let him leave unless Cash performed “A Boy Named Sue” but Cash refuses Nixon’s request for “Okie From Muskogee.”

1976 Queen‘s A Night At The Opera peaks at Number Four on the album chart.

1982 “(Oh) Pretty Woman” by Van Halen, a cover of the Roy Orbison song, peaks at Number 12 on the pop chart.

1994 Pink Floyd‘s The Dark Side Of The Moon is named the Number Four best-selling album in U.S. history, trailing the Eagles‘ Their Greatest Hits 1971-75Fleetwood Mac‘sRumours, and Michael Jackson‘s Thriller.

2002 The Aerosmith mtvICON Award show airs.

2002 Blink-182Green Day, and Jimmy Eat World kick off the Pop Disaster tour in Bakersfield, California.

2003 Former Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee is found not guilty by a Los Angeles jury of the drowning of a four-year-old boy in his swimming pool. A $10 million wrongful death lawsuit filed by the child’s parents is also rejected.

2004 A rare guitar once owned by late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain is auctioned off for $117,500.

2007 Nine Inch Nails releases Year Zero, the band’s fifth album and first conceptual effort. The record’s story takes place in the year 2022, when the U.S. has been taken over by a religious dictatorship that may be putting drugs in the nation’s water supply while the world nears the brink of environmental and social collapse.
