1940 Frank Zappa is born. He dies in 1993.
1970 Elvis Presley drives himself to the White House for a meeting with President Nixon and volunteers to join the war on drugs. Presley gives Nixon a chrome-plated Colt .45 pistol, and Nixon gives Presley a Narcotics Bureau badge.
1985 Bugs Bunny gets a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame.
1988 Working Girl, starring Melanie Griffith, Harrison Ford and Sigourney Weaver, opens nationwide.
1988 Pan Am Flight 101 is blown up above Lockerbie, Scotland, by a terrorist bomb. All 259 people on board die, as do 11 more on the ground.
1989 Vice President Dan Quayle sends out 30,000 Christmas cards with the word “beacon” misspelled as “beakon.”
1998 Sugar Ray releases the 14:59 album.
1998 Hole‘s Celebrity Skin album is certified platinum.
2001 Kiss singer-bassist Gene Simmons appears on the CNBC show Power Lunch to talk about marketing.
2003 White Stripes singer/guitarist Jack White is charged in Detroit with aggravated assault after a fight a week earlier with Von Bondies singer-guitaristJason Stollsteimer. White claims he struck Stollsteimer in self defense.
2004 Staind announces that it’s filed a lawsuit against Jon C. Stainbrook for trademark infringement and breach of contract. Staind claims it’s been forced to take legal action when Stainbrook attempts to re-register “The Stain” as a trademark, despite the fact that the band purchased it from him in 1999.
2006 13 people are injured on the second-to-last stop on Disturbed‘s Music As A Weapon tour, at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
2007 Hinder frontman Austin Winkler is arrested in Jonesboro, Arkansas on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.
2010 Foo Fighters play a secret show in the Los Angeles area that plays host to a mini-reunion of three surviving members of Nirvana, with Foos and former Nirvana members Dave Grohl and Pat Smear joined by Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic near the end of the night to perform on a rare Nirvana B-side called “Marigold.”
