1934 Actor Bill Bixby (The Courtship Of Eddie’s Father, The Incredible Hulk) is born. He dies in 1993.
1940 Actor John Hurt (actor, Alien, The Elephant Man, Harry Potter And The Sorcerer’s Stone) is born. He dies in January 2017.
1960 Former INXS lead singer Michael Hutchence is born. He dies in 1997.
1973 Former President Lyndon Baines Johnson dies.
1973 The U.S. Supreme Court legalizes most abortions in its Roe v. Wade decision.
1987 Pennsylvania treasurer R. Budd Dwyer, who’s been convicted of defrauding the state, proclaims his innocence at a news conference before shooting himself to death in front of TV cameras and horrified spectators. The incident later provides the inspiration for Filter‘s breakthrough 1995 single “Hey Man, Nice Shot.”
1990 Guns ‘N Roses guitarist Slash uses profanity numerous times on live television while accepting an American Music Award on ABC. The country does not collapse.
1992 Nirvana‘s single “Smells Like Teen Spirit” is certified gold.
1994 Actor Telly Savalas (The Dirty Dozen, Kojak) dies at age 70.
1996 The Offspring‘s Ignition album is certified gold, while Siamese Dream from the Smashing Pumpkins is certified quadruple platinum.
1997 Madeleine Albright becomes the first female secretary of state after confirmation by the United States Senate.
1998 Theodore Kaczynski pleads guilty to being the Unabomber in return for a sentence of life in prison without parole.
2002 Kmart Corp. files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, making it the largest retailer in history to seek legal protection from its creditors.
2002 Nine Inch Nails makes their first ever in-store signing appearance at the Virgin Megastore in Times Square in New York City.
2004 Evanescence lead singer Amy Lee apologizes online to the members of Cold for remarks in which she insinuated that the band was breaking up, and that singer Scooter Ward had a drug problem.
2004 Documents uncovered by thesmokinggun.com reveal that Courtney Love is being sued by a California law firm that claims she owes them nearly $229,000.
2007 Rage Against The Machine officially confirms that it will reunite after seven years for a headlining performance at the 2007 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, with the band eventually booking more dates beyond that.
