There will be no hall pass today. Here’s what happened today in Rock N’ Roll.

1981 The head of John Walsh‘s son Adam is found in Hollywood, Florida. This event will later prompt Congress to pass the Missing Children’s Act, giving the FBI greater authority to track the disappearance of children. It also makes Walsh a national spokesman against crime and eventually leads to the establishment of America’s Most Wanted.

1981 Cal Ripken, Jr. makes his major league debut for the Baltimore Orioles as a pinch-runner.

1991 “You Could Be Mine” by Guns N’ Roses peaks at Number 29 on the pop chart.

1993 Ruth Bader Ginsburg is sworn in as the U.S. Supreme Court’s 107th justice, and second woman.

1994 Bill Clinton claims presidential immunity in asking a federal judge to dismiss, at least for the time being, a sexual harassment lawsuit filed by Paula Corbin Jones, a former Arkansas state employee.

1995 “Hollywood Madame” Heidi Fleiss is convicted of conspiracy, tax evasion, and money laundering.

1995 R.E.M.‘s Monster album is certified quadruple platinum.

1995 Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols are charged with 11 counts in the April 19th bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City. The pair pleads innocent. Both are later convicted, with McVeigh being put to death and Nichols sentenced to life without parole.

2000 Dave Matthews marries Ashley Harper.

2002 Actor Nicolas Cage marries Lisa Presley, daughter of Elvis. It’s Cage’s second marriage and Presley’s third. They later divorce.

2004 Rock Against Bush, Vol. 2, a second collection of punk and alternative songs compiled in the hope of evicting George Bush from the White House, is released. Foo Fighters,Green DayNo DoubtSugarcult, and Yellowcard are among the acts that contribute tunes to the disc.

2005 A Washington County Circuit Court judge rules that people who bought an Evanescence live album called Anywhere But Home at Wal-Mart stores in Maryland can get refunds for it. The ruling partially settles a lawsuit brought by a Maryland couple, who complained that the copy of the record they bought included explicit lyrics but did not carry a parental warning sticker.

2006 Scotland Yard disrupts a major terrorist plot to destroy aircraft traveling from the United Kingdom to the United States.

2007 British rock legend Tony Wilson dies of kidney cancer at the age of 57. Best known as the founder of Factory Records, the influential label where he signed seminal alternative acts such as Joy DivisionNew Order and the Happy Mondays, Wilson was one of the driving forces behind the Manchester music scene.
