1778 The United States and France sign treaties that ally the two countries against Britain.
1895 Legendary baseball Hall Of Famer Babe Ruth is born (he always insisted that he was born in 1894). He dies on August 16th, 1948, from throat cancer.
1899 The Spanish-American War ends.
1911 Former U.S. president Ronald Reagan is born. He dies in 2004.
1912 Adolf Hitler companion Eva Braun is born. She dies in 1945.
1914 Actor Thurl Ravenscroft (sang the How The Grinch Stole Christmas song “You’re A Mean One, Mr. Grinch”; the voice of Frosted Flakes mascot Tony The Tiger) is born. He dies in May 2005.
1922 Patrick Macnee (actor, The AvengersThis Is Spinal TapA View To A Kill) is born. He dies in June 2015.
1935 he first Monopoly board game goes on sale.
1945 Reggae legend and Rock And Roll Hall Of Famer Bob Marley is born. He dies in 1981.
1987 Pop singer Sonny Bono announces that he’s running for mayor of Palm Springs, California. He wins the election.
1991 Actor Danny Thomas (Make Room For Daddy; he also produced The Andy Griffith ShowThe Dick Van Dyke Show, and The Mod Squad; father of Marlo Thomas) dies at age 77.
1992 Presidential candidate Bill Clinton denies that he tried to avoid the Vietnam War draft.
1993 Tennis legend Arthur Ashe dies at age 49, after contracting HIV through a blood transfusion.
1994 Comic-book legend Jack Kirby dies at age 76. Kirby and Stan Lee co-created the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, and the Avengers, among others.
1995 Pearl Jam performs two free concerts in Seattle for fan club members only.
2000 First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton launches her successful bid to become the junior U.S. senator from New York.
2003 Incubus files a complaint in Los Angeles County Superior Court, seeking to end their contract with Immortal Records and Sony Music. The band invokes Section 2855 of the California Labor Code, which states that no artist can be “required to render its personal services in the production of phonorecords for more than seven years.” The suit is later settled and the band remains with Sony.
2004 The Offspring song “Hit That,” from their record Splinter, hits Number One on the Modern Rock radio chart.
2006 H.I.M. singer Ville Valo is taken into custody by police after allegedly threatening to kill his neighbor at his apartment building in Helsinki, Finland.
2006 A Hurricane Katrina benefit EP put together by R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe goes on sale on iTunes. It features six different cover versions of singer-songwriter Joseph Arthur‘s “In The Sun,” with guests including Coldplay‘s Chris MartinJustin TimberlakeAdam Schlesinger from Fountains Of Wayne, and James Iha of Smashing Pumpkins and A Perfect Circle.
