1950 Tony Wilson, co-founder of Factory Records whose signings of Joy Division and the Happy Mondays helped put the Manchester, England music scene on the map, is born. He dies in 2007.
1967 Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain is born. He dies in 1994.
1976 The members of Kiss place their footprints in concrete on the pavement outside Grauman’s Chinese Theater on Hollywood Boulevard in Hollywood.
1988 “It’s The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)” by R.E.M. peaks at Number 69 on the pop chart.
1992 Actor Dick York (the first Darren on Bewitched) dies at age 63.
1995 Blur becomes the first band to ever win four prizes at the British Music Awards. The British press reports that the band amuse themselves during the awards dinner by throwing bread rolls at Prince.
1999 Movie critic Gene Siskel dies at age 53.
2000 The Fox TV network cancels the scheduled rebroadcast of its highly rated special Who Wants To Marry A Multimillionaire? after learning that the groom, Rick Rockwell, was once accused of hitting and threatening to kill an ex-girlfriend, accusations that Rockwell denies.
2001 Beck releases a self-titled collection of B-sides and remixes through his website, limited to only 5,000 copies.
2001 Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters is named Best Male Rock Guitarist, ex-Hole member Melissa Auf Der Maur is named Best Female Bassist, and Adam Clayton ofU2 is named Best Male Bassist at the Orville H. Gibson Guitar Awards in Los Angeles.
2003 The White Stripes move the release date of their fourth album, Elephant, from April 15th to April 1st, due to Internet leaks.
2003 P.O.D. splits with founding guitarist Marcos Curiel. He is replaced by Jason Truby.
2003 One hundred people die in a fire at the Station nightclub in Rhode Island, during a performance by Great White. The band’s guitarist, Ty Longley, is among the dead.
2005 Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler announces that he and his wife Teresa are splitting up after 17 years.
2006 Avenged Sevenfold‘s third album, City Of Evil, is certified gold for sales of more than 500,000 copies.
2007 Ex-Jane’s Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro and his wife of three years, actress/model Carmen Electra, finalize their divorce in Los Angeles Superior Court.
2007 The previously announced Van Halen reunion tour with original frontman David Lee Roth gets postponed “indefinitely,” although it eventually takes place later in the year.
2008 Foo Fighters take home a pair of honors at the annual Brit Awards in London, winning best international band and best international album for Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace.
2009 The White Stripes reunite for the first time in two years to perform on the final episode of Late Night with Conan O’Brien.
2013 Pearl Jam‘s 1991 debut album, Ten, officially passes the 10 million mark in copies sold.
2013 Bullet For My Valentine‘s fourth studio album, Temper, Temper, sells 44,000 copies in its first week of release in the U.S. to debut at Number 13 on the Billboard 200 album chart.
