1920 Author-astronomer-scientist Isaac Asimov is born. He dies in 1992.
1935 Bruno Hauptmann goes on trial on charges of kidnapping and murdering the infant son of Charles & Anne Lindbergh. Hauptmann is eventually found guilty and executed for the crime.
1960 Senator John F. Kennedy of Massachusetts announces his candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination.
1965 The New York Jets sign University Of Alabama quarterback Joe Namath for a reported $400,000, making him the highest paid player in pro football.
1974 President Richard Nixon signs legislation requiring states to limit highway speeds to 55 miles per hour. Federal speed limits were abolished in 1995.
1979 Former Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious goes on trial for the murder of his girlfriend, Nancy Spungen. The trial is never completed because Vicious dies of a heroin overdose a month later.
1990 Actor Alan Hale, Jr., the Skipper on Gilligan’s Island, dies at 71.
1995 Marion Barry is inaugurated as mayor of Washington, D.C., four years after leaving the office in disgrace to serve a six-month jail sentence for drug possession.
2004 Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith sits in with Sammy Hagar and his band the WaboRitas at Hagar’s Cabo Wabo Cantina in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, after Wabos drummer David Lauser heads home because of a family emergency.
2004 Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson posts bond and is released from the Collier County Jail in Florida, after being arrested for fighting with police at a New Year’s Eve party at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Naples, Florida. He is eventually given a year’s probation after pleading no contest to a misdemeanor charge of resisting arrest without violence.
2006 Snow Patrol‘s latest album, Eyes Open, is named the biggest selling British release of 2006, selling over one million copies in its homeland alone.
