1955 The Guinness Book Of World Records is first published.
1964 Actress-comedienne (and wife of George BurnsGracie Allen dies at age 69.
1982 Rickey Henderson of the Oakland A’s breaks Lou Brock‘s 1974 single season record of 118 stolen bases.
1984 President Ronald Reagan announces that a schoolteacher will be the first “citizen astronaut” to fly aboard the space shuttle. The eventual choice, Christa McAuliffe, dies in theChallenger disaster in January 1986.
1990 Stevie Ray Vaughan and three members of Eric Clapton‘s entourage are killed when the helicopter they’re traveling in crashes into a man-made ski slope in dense fog in Wisconsin. Vaughan was 35 years old.
1992 Courtney Love files a lawsuit against the British tabloid newspaper The Sun after it alleges that Love’s daughter with Kurt CobainFrances Bean Cobain, was born addicted to drugs.
1992 Stone Temple Pilots‘ debut album Core is certified double platinum.
1994 Hole names Melissa Auf Der Maur as their new bassist, replacing the late Kristin Pfaff.
1995 Neil Young performs at the Reading Festival in the U.K., with Pearl Jam as his backing band.
2002 British band Coldplay releases A Rush Of Blood To The Head.
2002 Queens Of The Stone Age release their third album, Songs For The Deaf.
2003 Hoobastank guitarist Dan Estrin is involved in a motorbike accident in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, suffering a skull fracture and requiring surgery. Although he is initially expected to recover after a few days, it takes the better part of a month.
2008 A 27-year-old blogger named Kevin Cogill is arrested at his Los Angeles home by federal agents on suspicion of violating federal copyright laws for leaking nine unreleasedGuns N’ Roses songs online.
2013 Avenged Sevenfold releases its sixth studio album, Hail To The King.
